The Delhi to Rishikesh road trip is a journey I have made many times. It is one of the best weekend getaways from Delhi. The distance is comfortable. The road is smooth. And the scenery changes from busy city streets to peaceful hills and river views .
Many people ask me for a perfect plan. This guide gives you everything you need for a great trip. It covers the route, stops, things to do, and travel tips based on my own experience.
Planning Your Trip

Before you start your car or bike, you need to know a few basics. These will help you delhi to rishikesh road trip itinerary.
Distance and Travel Time
The road distance from Delhi to Rishikesh is about 240 kilometers . The travel time depends on traffic. On a normal day, it takes around 5 to 6 hours .
If you start early morning, you can avoid Delhi traffic. This can cut your travel time to about 4 to 5 hours.
Best Time to Go
The best months for this trip are from October to March . The weather is cool and pleasant during this time. It is perfect for driving, sightseeing, and adventure activities like river rafting.
Avoid the monsoon months of July and August . Heavy rain can make the roads unsafe. It can also lead to swollen rivers. Also, try to avoid long holiday weekends. The roads get very crowded. You will spend more time in traffic than on the road.

Choosing Your Route
There are two main routes from Delhi to Rishikesh. I recommend the first one for most travelers.
Route 1: Via NH334 – The Fast Route
This is the best and fastest route . It takes you through major cities like Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, and Haridwar before reaching Rishikesh .
-
Distance: About 235 kilometers
-
Travel Time: Around 6 hours
-
Road Condition: The road is excellent for most of the journey . This route has wide highways and smooth roads. This is the route I use every time. It is reliable and saves time.
Route 2: Via NH709B – The Scenic Route
This is a longer and more scenic route . It passes through Chandpur, Najibabad, and Bijnor before joining the main route near Haridwar.
-
Distance: About 288 kilometers
-
Travel Time: Around 7 hours
-
Road Condition: Most of the road is good. But some stretches have uneven patches . You need to be careful while driving on these parts.
If you have more time and want to see rural India, this route is a good option. You can see lush greenery and charming villages along the way.
Best Stops Along the Way
Taking breaks is important for a road trip. It keeps you fresh and alert. Here are the stops I suggest.
Breakfast Stop: Meerut
Meerut is about 70 kilometers from Delhi . This is a good place to stop for breakfast after you have left the city behind. You can find many roadside dhabas and restaurants here . Try the local street food like kachoris and samosas . I always stop for a hot plate of parathas and a cup of tea.
Midway Break: Muzaffarnagar
Muzaffarnagar is roughly halfway between Delhi and Rishikesh . This is a good place to stretch your legs and refuel. You will find many fuel stations and restaurants here.
Spiritual Stop: Haridwar
Haridwar is right before Rishikesh, just a 20-minute drive away . I always make a stop here.
If you have time, you can attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri . It is a beautiful and moving ceremony. You can also visit the Mansa Devi Temple or Chandi Devi Temple .
Even if you don't have time for these, just stopping near the river for a few minutes feels good. The sound of the flowing water is very calming .
Other Stops
-
Rajaji National Park: This is near Rishikesh. You can go for a safari to spot elephants and deer .
-
Roorkee: Another good place for a short tea break.
What to Do in Rishikesh?

Rishikesh has something for everyone. Here are the top things to do.
River Rafting
River rafting on the Ganga is one of the best things to do here . The stretch from Kaudiyala to Lakshman Jhula has many rapids. Some rapids have exciting names like "The Wall" and "Roller Coaster" . Rafting is suitable for both beginners and experienced people. Just make sure you wear safety gear .
Bungee Jumping
For the real adventure lovers, bungee jumping at Jumping Heights is a must . You jump from an 83-meter-high platform. It is a huge rush. The activity follows international safety standards.
Visit the Ashrams
Rishikesh is known as the Yoga Capital of the World. You must visit one of its famous ashrams . Parmarth Niketan has a peaceful atmosphere. Their evening aarti is very organized and beautiful . Sivananda Ashram is another good option.
Walk Across the Bridges
Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula are iconic bridges over the Ganga . You can walk across them and enjoy the beautiful views. The area around these bridges has many shops and cafes. (Note: Lakshman Jhula has been closed for crossing for safety reasons for some time, but you can still visit the nearby areas and enjoy the views) .
Beatles Ashram
This is a unique place to visit . This is where the famous band The Beatles stayed in the 1960s. Even if you are not a big fan, the place is interesting. It is now like an art gallery and a forest walk. Go in the late morning or early afternoon. Carry water with you.
Neer Garh Waterfall
For a nature break, visit Neer Garh Waterfall. It is a beautiful two-tiered waterfall . You have to take a short trek to reach it. The cool air and the sound of water are very refreshing. Make sure you wear shoes with good grip .
Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat
The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat is a soul-stirring experience . The priests perform rituals with lit lamps. Devotional songs fill the air. It is a very spiritual and peaceful experience. Go at least 30-45 minutes early to get a good spot .
